Children of Men (2006)

This is without a doubt my favorite brand of Science Fiction. Near future, fucked UP in a plausible way (Everyone is sterile-as in barren, and they all hate Immigrants) and the world looks really dirty and nothing really works.

The plot is that a man who has grown out of being a eco-terrorist friendly activist gets pulled back in to the fold by an old flame. The eco-activists need to smuggle a pregnant immigrant out of the dangerzone and he has some connections for paperwork. It quickly becomes clear that he has to take the pregnant girl on his own because all of the eco-activists are going to kill him, and use the baby for their own gains.

The storyline is gripping, the performances stellar (Michael Cain! Clive Owen! Juliane Moore! all great), the set design is flawless, but the real jewel in the crown is the cinematography.

Seriously, the camera work is breathtaking. Long, long shots involving lots of action and scene changes. I haven’t seen more impressive use of camera and blocking in I don’t know how long.

I cannot reccomend this movie highly enough. Five Fucking Stars.
