Hour of the Wolf (1968)

Ingmar Bergman, the king of Scandinavian film. Fuck all those other fakers. Dogma Ninety-wha?

The tagline explains the title: “The Hour of the Wolf” is the hour between night and dawn. It is the hour when most people die. It is the hour when the sleepless are haunted by their deepest fear, when ghosts and demons are most powerful.

As for the plot: Max Von Sydow is an artist who (along with his muse Liv Ullman) move to an island away from the things of man so he can work. It starts pretty idyllic and then he begins to see ghosts or spirits. They look like regular people, but are dark entities who want to possess their inner thoughts. Soon after he sees them, so does she and He becomes slowly controlled by them, begins to unravel and shit really gets weird.

Like David Lynch was definitely taking notes kinda weird.

Stunning photography, performances, lighting, editing. An interesting take on the idea of what a ghost story or a thriller is essentially. This shit is great, dark, scary and arty. If you’re into dark, scary and arty stuff: this is your bag.

  1. This movie is definitely precedent setting, i dig it quite a bit. Dark and scary is my bag, especially when you throw in oddity and stunning imagery..
