Satanis (1970)
A completely sympathetic documentary of the Church of Satan and the “Black House” that was its headquarters in the late 1960’s.
It’s not bad as a simple platform for Anton LaVey spout his partyline and other Satanists talk about why they’ve chosen the left hand path. Gratuitous nudity, garish lighting and overlong, it is not without it’s faults. But it serves well as a time capsule of exactly how much it must have sucked to be outside of the mainstream, but hate the hippie movement in 1969.
Seriously if you you were stuck in SF in 1969 would you rather stay at Jerry Garcias house or Anton LeVays? Me, I’m sure I’d get sick of his schtick quickly but I’d go Black House rather than get scabies from sleeping on PigPens sofa.
