Der Student von Prag (1913)

The Student of Prague is a really old movie. Old! Anyways, a down on his luck fellow rescues a rich girl from drowning and falls in love, but to woo her he needs some money. So Old Scratch shows up and offers him a mountain of gold coins for anything in his room. Our boy agrees and the Devils walks off with his soul (in the form of his reflection in the mirror-which looks pretty cool, frankly).

So his evil reflection is running around town doing dirt and popping up and ruining his dates and such. It drives the poor guy crazy. The Devil wins every time.

Thats about it, it’s pretty short. It’s historic and boring, but Lucifer’s beard is aces.

  1. Ooh! That sounds cool. I can’t remember, is Vampyr on your list? Criterion just released a DVD of it. It’s old. By C.T. Dreyer, the Passion of Joan of Arc guy. Anyway, it has some awesome shadow stuff that sounds similar. A man chasing a shadow around a farmhouse. Pretty cool. I’m a sucker for old movies. Sometimes it seems like most of the coolest stuff in cinema had already been done by 1930something.
