The Ice Pirates (1984)

Wacky Space Adventure parody directed by the man who brought you….Mac and Me and Mannequin 2: On the Move. I remembered really, really thinking this was funny when I was 7, so I gave it a chance.

Well, its kinda like Spaceballs. I mean, it is a Star Wars parody. But it also sets its sights on Alien, Road Warrior, Logans Run, BSG, Star Trek and a few others. For the most part, it works, and when it doesn’t the unintentional humor and kitch goes a long way. There are pirates (that dress like olde tyme pirates but in space), princesses, robots, aliens. There is a pimp-bot. There are poop jokes, herpes jokes, indulgent 80’s love scenes, the works. At the end they go into a time warp and its pretty rad. Straight up B-movie style here folks.

It was campy fun, lots of familiar faces. Angelica Huston, Ron Perlman among others…this is really a movie to watch if you are sick or high or both. In your pajamas, thats key.

maybe I’ll rewatch this one next, don’t tempt me.

Yes! There are weird snippets of this that are buried deep in my brain from watching this as a child. Now I am psyched to revisit! Definite PJ party. But is that a young Luis Guzman about 25 seconds into the trailer?!
