I Love You, Man (2009)

More from the Apatow crew of men being emotional with other men. Yes, I am a sucker for this shit, and yes: I liked this one too.

Paul Rudd is a very very awkward man with no male friends (other than his gay brother, who is played by Adam Sanburg in a great and understated performance), and he is freshly engaged. He needs a best man and quickly, so all of his friends and relatives start putting him on blind dates for friendship which is wildly awkward and along the way meets Jason Segel (Freaks and Geeks, y’all). They hit it off, Jasons free spirit honestly and anything goes “man cave” (full of instruments, records, a bong and a “masturbation station”) crack Paul’s stuffy and uptight exterior and they forge a beautiful man love.

Then of course it gets complicated, Pauls fiance (Rashida Jones of the Office) gets weirded out by their freaky bond and they have a fight, then Paul and Jason fall out, blah blah blah….plot-filler coasting to inevitable wedding scene. Whatever. None of that really matters, because it’s no masterpiece, but it’s pretty funny along the way.

The cast is fucking spot on, cameos from members of the State, the Office, the Dad from “Juno”,  John Favreau, Jane Curtain, the very funny Rob Huebel (he has had a bit part on every funny tv show of the last five years, no lie) and a performance by RUSH.

This is no great classic, I’ll probably not rewatch this one, unlike say “Superbad”, “40 Year Old Virgin” or “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, but it is a solid and enjoyable comedy.  I bet it’s also a hell of a lot better than anything Seth Rogan has been in lately (I wouldn’t know, I’m kind of avoiding him at the moment).

It’s weird that every girl I know is crushed out on this guy

  1. hi there~
I really, really enjoy your blog and have been reading for a while now…just thought I’d put that out there. :)

In regard to Seth Rogen, I, too, have been avoiding him until recently. Have you seen Observe and Report? Initially, I thought it was going to be like that Mall Cop movie, but I was so very wrong. It is disturbing and hilarious. I think it is out on dvd soon. Interested to know what you think. :)
