There Will Be Blood (2007)
A sprawling epic film centering on Daniel Plainview (a mindblowing and iconic over the top performance from Daniel Day Lewis) a ruthless oilman who purchases the oil-rich land of the godly and easily duped Sunday family on the tip of a wayward son.
The other Sunday son is Eli, an aspiring fire and brimstone Preacher who pulls big moves and power plays on Plainview. These men do not miss any opportunities to fuck eachother over or humiliate the other publicly. Each eventually carving out their own little corner of madness, Daniel in the wealth and opulence that years in the dangerous oilfields has afforded him and for Eli in the desperation for power and wealth that has eluded him.
Along the way Daniel thumbs his nose at multi-million dollar deals with big oil corporations based on petty swipes and hurt feelings, he abandons and alienates his adopted son, and crushes any personal relationship that present themselves.
He is a dark and driven man. This is a dark and driven film, it is an amazing watch. America, Oil, God, Greed, everything is capitalized. At 2 1/2 hours, the time files.
Soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood, twitchy and paranoid. It’s presence is felt in every scene, overbearing in the best way.

My favorite film of the last decade, easy.
This one feels like he was on a huge Kubrick kick while making it. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
